Legend tells of a great predator that lies dormant underground, waiting for tasty prey: its origins date back to the time when the Druids ruled the Magical Forest and to protect it from intruders they generated a powerful guardian capable of stopping caravans and poachers.

Obviously 'The Thing That Comes From Below' (as it was called by those who survived) had no intellect and given the collateral damage it caused with its passage, the druids associated a command word with pain, so that the creature would flee and cease its devastation when it was needed.
